Notes on Application

Minimum application temperature

  • Cure will not proceed to completion if the temperature is below 15℃.
  • Material may be applied at temperatures down to 10℃, but cannot be brought into service until the temperature has exceeded 15℃ for at least 36 hours.
  • For use in low temperatures Araldite CA 273-1 is recommended.

Surface preparation

  • Complete durable adhesion can only be achieved if the surfaces to be bonded are properly pretreated.
  • In all cases except for concrete, the pretreatment procedure should be to DEGREASE, ABRADE AND DEGREASE AGAIN.
  • For concrete the final degreasing procedure can be omitted but all loose material and dust must be removed.

Degreasing

  • The removal of all traces of dirt, oil and grease can be achieved by using a solvent such as Eposolve CE 70, acetone, trichloroethane, etc. Methylated spirits, petrol and paint thinners are unsuitable.
  • Concrete should be degreased by washing with a strong detergent solution.

Note: Most solvents are highly flammable. The prescribed safety precautions must always be taken.

Abrading

  • Grit-blasting is the ideal pretreatment for metallic and non-metallic surfaces.
  • If grit blasting is impractical or cannot be carried out, alternative pretreatments include abrading thoroughly with a grinder, needle gun, scabbler, emery cloth or similar.

Moisture Tolerance

  • ARALDITE® CA 125-1 KIT has a good adhesion only to dry or slightly damp surfaces.
  • Bonding to very damp or wet surfaces should not be attempted.
  • If surface is slightly damp, good results may be obtained by applying a thin layer of CA 125-1 onto the surface or by using Araldite CM 79 as a liquid primer.
  • In either case, the bulk of the CA 125-1 must be applied before the primer hardens, usually within 4 hours.

Mixing

  • Blend by trowel on a flat sealed board until uniform grey.
  • Mechanical mixers may be used but the sides and bottom of the mixing container must be checked to ensure thorough mixing.
  • Avoid excessive aeration of the mix.

Pot life
1 litre of mix will have a usable life as follows:

at 15℃ - 80 minutes
at 25℃ - 40 minutes
at 35℃ - 20 minutes

NOTE: A 10℃ increase or decrease in temperature will half or double the pot life and cure times respectively.

Cleaning

  • Any spillages should be cleaned up as they occur.
  • Use dry sand or sawdust to soak up bulk of large spillages, and deposit into waste drums.
  • Clean up small spillages before they set with Eposolve CE 70 or warm water and detergent.
  • Tools and equipment should be cleaned with Eposolve CE 70 or warm water and detergent before the adhesive has had time to set.
  • Once this product has cured only severe heat or prolonged immersion in a powerful solvent will break it down.

Coverage

  • This will depend on surface roughness. Generally spreads of 0.25mm to 0.5mm thickness are adequate for most bonding purposes.
  • These correspond to usage by weight of 0.36 to 0.72 kg per square metre.
  • Note that 1 litre of mix applied to 1 square metre will give a thickness of 1 mm, and will require 1.4 to 1.5 kg of material.
Product Applications

For the bonding of major materials of construction including:

  • F.C. Sheet, bricks & ceramics
  • Marble cladding
  • Metals
  • Precast concrete
  • For the grouting of bolts and starter bars into horizontal holes (for vertical holes use CA 80).
  • For repairing wide cracks and surface damage in concrete and masonry particularly in vertical situations where sag resistance is required. Graded sand may be added for concrete repair applications

Storage & Handling

Storage Information

The product has a shelf life of at least one year provided this it is stored at 5 - 35℃ in a dry place and in sealed original containers.

Handling Information

This material has been formulated with the objective of being as safe as possible. However, in common with most epoxy resins and hardeners, consistent skin contact with uncured materials may cause irritation of sensitive skins. For this reason contact with the uncured materials must be avoided at all times.

Recommended working procedures are as follows:

1) Before commencing work make sure that there is a good supply of:

  • Clean overalls, rubber gloves, thin cotton inner gloves and goggles or face shields
  • Barrier cream
  • Waterless hand cleaner
  • Absorbent paper towels or clean rags
  • Water
  • Apply barrier cream to exposed skin areas

2) During work:

  • If material comes into contact with skin, wipe off immediately with paper or rags and wash with water (use waterless hand cleaner if necessary).
  • Do not use solvents to wash skin.
  • If overalls or inside of gloves become contaminated, remove as soon as practicable and replace with clean overalls and gloves.
  • Reapply barrier cream after washing.
  • If the material is used in fully confined spaces, a means of removing any fumes must be provided. A respirator is not necessary.

NOTE: All mandatory and recommended industrial hygiene procedures should also be followed.
